In the latest issue of the economist, the economist has published an interesting model which not only identifies the factors that affect the development potential of a country's football, but also gives some pertinent suggestions to the development of Chinese football.
The model's indicators are focused on economic and sports factors, including: a country's richness on the basis of per capita GDP (previous studies have shown that the richer the country is, the greater the possibility of football development) and the popularity of football in the country (most of which comes from FIFA; the latest years of data. Based on the frequency of the search for the word "football" on Google, the other country's sports expenses and the number of Olympic medals are also included), the last indicator is the home advantage.
After running the results of all international competitions that 126 countries took part in after 1990, they found that the model could explain 40% of the average net variance of national teams. According to the model, soccer performance in Uruguay, Brazil, Argentina and Spain exceeded expectations. For China, the result may be unacceptable: the actual performance of Chinese teams is already higher than that predicted by the model.
The economist explains that the low penetration rate is an important factor leading to the low potential of Chinese football. For example, FIFA data show that in 2006, only 2% of Chinese played football, compared with 7% in Europe and South America.
Referring to the experience of Uruguay and other countries, the economist put forward four proposals to improve football, some of which can be directly applied to China.
